Microsoft to sell off remaining Surface Book 2 stock

In the coming days, Microsoft will being a worldwide sell-down on remaining stock of the Surface Book 2. The popular professional laptop was a runaway hit at launch despite its high price. However, now that the Book 2 is a few years old, it's time for Surface Book 3.

Surface Book 1

The original Surface Book was a revelation. A hinged, 3:2 touch screen laptop with an excellent keyboard and trackpad, pen support, touch support, fast modern internals, a dock, and range of accessories.

It made a big splash at a time when Apple had stagnated on the same MacBook Pro design for a long time. The Surface Book was really different at a time when Apple was doing nothing special.

Furthermore, the Surface Book surprised everyone by incorporating a detachable screen, called the Clipboard, that became a tablet in its own right.

It was a tad expensive... but it was packed with new and innovative features. Professional computer people and casual nerds loved it and bought it.

Surface Book 2

Surface Book 2 improved upon the design and function of the original, with an updated stiffer hinge mechanism, an improved screen-to-body lock and release mechanism, better battery life, newer processors, more accessories, and a wider choice of internal components.

It remained compatible with the original Surface Dock, and was forward compatible with the new Surface Pen and Surface Dial.

Microsoft is now selling out of remaining stock of the Surface Book 2, offering discounts of $200 to $300 at major retailers and in the Microsoft online store.

Now that the Book 2 is a few years old, it's time for a Surface Book 3.

Surface Book 3

No one knows what fairy dust and glamour to expect with the arrival of the Surface Book 3. An educated guess may tell us to expect:

  • newer Intel processors

  • higher speed RAM

  • 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB RAM options

  • a mildly updated hinge

  • a mildly updated screen

  • a USB-C port

  • a Thunderbolt port if we're very lucky

  • better battery life

  • Bluetooth 5.0

  • MIMO WiFi

  • far field microphones for Cortana and Alexa

  • mild to moderate Xbox crossover support

  • an updated Surface Dock

If we're very lucky, and if Microsoft is feeling adventurous, we may even see a new Performance Base option with a high-powered Intel Core i7 or Core i9 processor with appropriate cooling to support the processor-intensive tasks of professional customers.
